A corridor is a specific country-to-country route for sending money, such as US to Nigeria or UK to India. Each corridor has its own mix of costs, rails, regulations, and payout options, so the economics of sending $200 vary widely depending on where the money starts and ends.

How does a remittance corridor work?

A corridor describes the full path money travels between a sending country and a receiving country. When you send funds from the US to Nigeria, you are using the US-Nigeria corridor, and that route determines which banks, networks, and local partners touch the transaction along the way. The same provider can offer very different prices, speeds, and delivery methods across different corridors.

Each corridor is shaped by the payment rails available on both ends. On the sending side, a provider might pull funds via ACH or card; on the receiving side, delivery could be a bank credit, a mobile-money wallet, or cash pickup.   • Compliance layer: the KYC and AML checks required in both jurisdictions

Why corridors differ so much from one another

No two corridors are alike, and that is why a transfer from the US to Mexico can settle in seconds for a low fee while a transfer from the US to a smaller African market may cost more and take a day. Corridor economics come down to volume, competition, and infrastructure. High-volume routes attract many providers, which drives fees down and speeds up. Thin, low-volume corridors have fewer competitors and less mature local rails, so costs stay elevated.

Regulation also varies by corridor. Some receiving countries impose currency controls, licensing hurdles, or documentation requirements that add friction and cost. Providers must maintain liquidity in the destination currency, often through prefunding local accounts, and that tied-up capital gets priced into the corridor. A corridor with a volatile currency or restricted access to foreign exchange will almost always be more expensive to serve.

This is why comparing a single provider's global average fee tells you little. What matters is the price and reliability on your corridor. A remittance company can be excellent on US-India and mediocre on US-Ghana, because the underlying partners and rails are completely different.
